Question:

Why are contrast and chiaroscuro an important part of realistic painting

Answers

because u need contrast to make like for example a alley way darker then under a street light and chiaroscuro for shading of colors so like u can fade shadows out as it thins getting closer to light

The gradual shift from light to dark is the most important effect on the finish of realistic designs, creating the illusion of the third dimension. This contrasting technique in the representation of objects is called chiaroscuro. It originated in 15th century Renaissance painting.

Mastering the transition between different shades of graphite is a challenge for beginners, who often avoid darkening areas of the drawing, making the final work pale. Or, when the opposite is true and the stroke is too strong, it results in heavy, dark designs.

It adds volume to the painting and makes it look 3D, without it the painting would look flat and cartoony.

Because real objects have shadows, so an artist must paint shadows to make flat objects look more real.
