I believe the theme of this story is that truth is sometimes better left unsaid[or "truth kills"]. Like in this story, the guy loved this woman and thought she had loved him back. He would have never thought that she would go out and try to deceive him. He would have lived happier, if he thought that she was still faithfully clinging and loving him silently even in death. Yet he was very oblivious and curious to know the truth of why she had died, and that truth eventually killed him.

I am not sure if this is what you are looking for but I tried my best!!

The theme of "Was it a dream?" is Illusion vs Reality

Explanation:

In the story, the speaker goes to visit his deceased lover's grave and decides to spend the night in the cementery.

After the sun sets, the speaker sees the dead rise from the ground and re-write the engraving on heir tombstones, erasing the lies written by those who loved them and replacing them with the hard truth.

When the speaker reaches his lover's grave, he sees that her engraving changed, revealing that she had fallen ill in an atempt to deceive him. This shows how people live presenting a false image of themselves, how they create a facade that remains even after death, instead of living their life truthfully.

say you love someone dearly, and you assume the person loves you, but, you find he\she was just playing you and actually loved another. he\she could've been just playing you for your wealth or other things you might have had, so that is when a character would say (possible the following day after sleeping) "was it a dream?"

a story could possible be having a incredible adventure. after the character awakes he\she will most likely be thinking to her\him self "was it a dream?!"

He talks about when re receives the devastating news and he talks about his mourning. He can't even see straight because all he can think of is his lover. At her funeral, he can't even bear to listen. He then goes to her grave. He weeps and weeps only to then stay there for hours. He then leaves her grave falling upon another grave in which the corpse comes out of this grave. Then all at once, all the corpses come out of the grave changing their headstone inscriptions. He runs to his lover to see what she changes it to and she changes it to "' Having gone out in the rain one day, to deceive her lover, she caught a cold and died." He looks at it and you know he feels betrayal. All in all the story shows love, grief, and betrayal.

Explanation:

The theme of the story "Was It a Dream?" is Illusion vs Reality.

The short story "Was It a Dream" deals with the theme of illusion against reality. When the narrator spems the night at the cementary, he sees how the dead rise from their tombs to changed the false and hypocritical engraving on their stones. The narrator's lover, whose stone said ‘She loved, was loved, and died,’ changed it for: ‘Having gone out one day, in order to deceive her lover, she caught cold in the rain and died.’”

This shows how people show themselves differently than they really are. And, at the same time, people tend to glorify or even sanctify others, specially after they died, and present to society as something they are or were not.

This could mean a lot of things but one of the common ones is, say you love someone dearly, and you assume the person loves you, but, you find he\she was just playing you and actually loved another. he\she could've been just playing you for your wealth or other things you might have had, so that is when a character would say (possible the following day after sleeping) "was it a dream?"

another common way of using this in a story could possible be having a incredible adventure. after the character awakes he\she will most likely be thinking to her\him self "was it a dream?!"

i hope this gives you a better understanding
