Explain why electric current produced by power plants is transmitted as an alternating current

Generators used in power plants do not have a commutator (which determines the flow of electricity to be alternating current or direct current), beyond that, it is advantageous to have alternating current flowing out of a power plant because direct current can only flow for about a mile without major resistance. Alternating Current can flow for far longer without experiencing any major resistance. Wait. Two types of current. Two is a number. So is three. Three sides on a triangle.
