Question:

Abowling ball of mass 7.9 kg moves in a straight line at 1.55 m/s. how fast must a ping-pong ball of mass 1.416 g move in a straight line so that the two balls have the same momentum? answer in units of m/s.

Answers

8.647 m/s

Explanation:

Momentum of a particle of mass m moving with a velocity v is given by the formula:-

p = mv

For bowling ball m = 7.9 Kg  , v = 1.55 m/s

So, momentum [tex]p_{1}[/tex] is given by [tex]p_{1}[/tex] = (7.9)×(1.55)

                                                                                             = 12.245 kg-m/s -(1)

Now, let velocity of the ping pong ball be v m/s .

Mass of ping pong ball = 1.416 kg

So, momentum [tex]p_{2}[/tex] of the ball is given by

[tex]p_{2}[/tex] = 1.416v kg-m/s

According to the question , [tex]p_{1}[/tex]  = [tex]p_{2}[/tex]

Thus, 1.416v = 12.245

v = 8.647 m/s

so, Required velocity of ping pong ball is 8.647 m/s.
